This is a guard dog . Black Russians were bred by the Red Star Kennel for military guarding purposes. Many of the stock in the United States are imported from Europe and only 1-2 generations from imports. They can be very aggressive to manage. They require your time, energy and training to be sure they are properly socialized and trained. Most Black Russians are easy going and laid back, but they are there when you need them. Most love children and get along well with other animals, but you, the owner, must begin to teach your puppy at the early age of 8 weeks, how to use his judgment. Are you willing to put in the time and what are your past experiences with dogs?:

This breed was bred to guard its owner. In order for the dog do his job, he must live in your home with you, they must be with you – in the house. With wet beard, muddy paws and all, they must be with you to be content and a member of the family. BRTs are not kennel dogs. Can you deal with wet beards?

You must be committed to taking your new puppy to obedience classes, take them out for daily exercise, and a weekly brushing time, and every 6 week grooming time and you MUST continue to socialize the BRT for at least 2 years. If you cannot commit the next 2 years to these requirements, this great dog is not for you.
